Dog and puppy worried because of noises

Noise Phobia: A possibly serious problem

Noise phobia is illogical fear of sounds that we humans know are harmless, but our pets and horses don't necessarily know that. Up to 50% of dogs can have anything from saddening anxiety, to frantic fear when they hear unknown noises. This can be from being sad, to very serious, with injury or damage for dog or owner, dogs fleeing and getting lost, or even death.

The method to deal with this problem is called noise phobia therapy. In the classical method, potentially scary sounds are played, usually from one CD or set of MP3 sounds. The volume is from very low in the beginning, to full volume in the end, in the therapy process that can take several weeks. The goal is that the dog becomes used to the sounds and is not scared when they are actually heard.

WeStopFear has carefully analyzed the classical process, and believes it has drawbacks that are vital to address.

Innovations of WeStopFear

WeStopFear™ has developed a new technical therapy process, designed with the goal that the majority of users will hopefully see it as easiersimplersafermore natural and more bearable. The system is called Simple Secure Steps™.

WeStopFear is the most comprehensive solutions ever offered.  It is a member's website with Internet-streaming audio players.  It is thus similar to music streaming websites. You can use your mobile device or computer, connected wirelessly or with cable to loudspeakers with good volume and audio quality. MP3 download is also an upgrade option.

The volume level of the therapy sounds is pre-set to the correct volume, in five steps. This makes the process simpler and safer. Access to the steps is managed, meaning less hassle and organization is needed.

WeStopFear offers a solution for dogs along with all other types of pets, and horses. It is a matter of principle, that owners of all pet types will have this opportunity to improve their pets' wellbeing.

WeStopFear is systematically designed for improvement

The most extensive noise phobia therapy solution in history and the first extensive set of multi-faceted innovations in this field  since around 2010 that we know of.

Dog focused interface

The user experience, graphics, extensive instructions, and list of signs of fear and phobia are focused on dogs. You will feel “at home” as a dog owner with dog-specific advice and graphics.

Safer for your dog

Mistakes are “designed out” of the process and made close-to-impossible. Natural Intervals make it more likely that your dog and yourself will endure the process well. With future maintenance of success.

Simpler and easier for you

The innovations of Volume Anchor, Ascending Loudness, Timed Access and Natural Intervals make these Simple Secure Steps easier, simpler and safer for you to implement.

Is your dog in danger of this problem?

Hopefully not but it is possible. We cannot tell which (type) will encounter this or when. Although fireworks, thunder and traffic are common, then any sound can cause problems.

The most logical thing for you is to conduct this type of therapy to prevent it. This makes it a less likely problem.

Is your dog already fearful of some sound?

If so, then necessary to conduct this therapy to heal the situation.

We Want Fewer Stories Like These

Anxious, or worse?

Imagine a normal day with your dog. You should not have a care in the world, but your dog is anxious and whimpering, because of a sound it heard, a sound you know is entirely harmless. It is common among up to 50% of dogs to be uneasy of fearful because of some sounds it does not understand. This is not very serious, but the day is not as joyful as it should be. But for some dogs it can be more serious. Around 2% of dogs can from time to time have very serious problems of this kind. You never know which dog will face this. The likelihood increases with higher age. This can even be catastrophic:

profile image of a German Shepherd head

What is this??

Imagine you own a sweet and loving dog. It has been a part of the family for years. Then one day fireworks are set off near your home. Your dog reacts with such fear that it jumps up and through the glass door that leads to the patio. In shock, you are left with broken glass and drops of blood on the patio, and your dog has disappeared into the dark night. For days, you have no information about your dog. Then days later after an agonizing wait, you are contacted by police. Your dog had run over a motor highway and was hit by a truck and fatally injured there. Your dog was microchipped, so that is the reason you did get information about it.

Scared dog bites, what next?

Imagine you own a sweet and loving dog. Then one day it becomes startled because of sudden, unknown noises. The surprising experience throws your dog into a tantrum of fear. It runs amok inside the home, damaging furniture and causing lacerations and teeth and mouth injuries. When your child tries to get your dog under control, your dog reacts by biting the child. The child needs to go to the hospital and a report about the incident is made. What will happen next? Now this is a dog that bites humans. Can the situation be alleviated, or will it be necessary to euthanize your dog?

Prevent or heal

These imaginary trauma stories are based on actual events. They happen every year, and sadly often.

Accidents and negative consequences of fear of sounds can not be completely eliminated, but their likelihood can be reduced, and the problems may be less serious for those who are affected. Maybe that could include your dog?

Noise phobia therapy is the methodology designed to prevent or heal these problems.

Many stories

Have your heard about this type of problem before? Try searching the web for stories. You can use search phrases like 'dogs noise phobia', 'dogs scared of noises', 'dogs fear of fireworks', 'dogs fear of thunderstorms', 'dogs lost injury fear of fireworks and thunderstorms'.

Try the 5 steps audio players

There are 5 steps in the Simple Secure Steps therapy process. The sounds in the steps are the same. It is only that the volume is pre-set correctly in each step: From very, very low in Step 1, to full natural volume in Step 5. You get access to Step 1 in the beginning, and then gradually to Step 2, Step 3, Step 4 and Step 5, and finally the ongoing Maintain Success stage.

Below are streaming audio player with short samples of therapy sounds.

Setting the volume

In the beginning, you find the correct volume setting for the loudspeakers of your audio playback device by playing the piano tune below. The volume setting should be so that the piano music is at a good and clear  listening level, not very low like soft dinner music at a restaurant, not extremely loud like a rock concert

You will keep this same volume on a particular audio device that you use in a particular location, every time in all the steps. If there are markings or numbers that show the volume setting, then you need to find the right volume setting on the audio device only once. But if there is no scale, number or markings, then you need to play the piano tune each time to set the volume correctly.

After you have set the volume, try playing the sounds in each step. Do not do this when your animal is present. The volume in the higher steps could give it a shock, just like the actual sounds when they are heard suddenly.

Streaming, choose and custom

In the therapy member's pages, you have access to a streaming player that plays the playlist in random order with just one button click, each sound once and then stops. You also have access to players to play individual sounds like below, and you can also choose a number of sounds to create your own custom playlist, which will then be played in random order.

Video therapy

WeStopFear also includes an innovative Video Therapy. The Simple Secure Steps noise phobia therapy is about noises. But visual stimuli can also be scary, especially fireworks and thunder and lightning.

The experimental video therapy allows you to expose your animal to these visual stimuli with the sounds. The idea is that your animal gets used to the visual fanfare, and will possibly be less likely to become scared of the real thing.

The download upgrade includes the video MP4 files, for playback on a device not connected to the Internet.

Six factors of success

No training tool can guarantee 100% success. Conducting noise phobia therapy,  either with WeStopFear of some other solution (they can all work well, WeStopFear is simply a new therapy process design), does not mean that you are 100% certain that no dog who has received this method will ever become frightened by noises again. There are many factors which WeStopFear cannot give any guarantee on, as the image below shows. The therapy solution is one part of the equation, and great care has been taken of developing a solution that is the best that WeStopFear can offer, but others are the dogs themselves and their sensitivity, the owners and their expertise in implementation, the audio devices and loudspeakers, the future care, and random events that can have some unforeseen consequences.

What WeStopFear can assert (although not guarantee) is that if say 1 million pet and horse owners would conduct this kind of method diligently, then the overall situation would be much better for those pets and horses, with a lower percentage experiencing trouble, and a higher percentage living their lives free from these problems, compared to 1 million pet and horse owners who would do nothing of this kind.
